About Art

Maheshwari saree - A name which drives tradition, heritage, richness and quality. It says that it was Rajmata Ahilyabai Holkar who brought the weavers from Mandu (City in M.P.) then weavers took it forward by producing sarees locally, initial designs were based on Maharashtrian culture.
In traditional Maheshwari saree, we can see the patterns inspired from historic Maheshwar fort.

Process - The initial process of crafting starts from sourcing of raw material from a specific place and of desired quality matric Silk from Bengaluru, gold zari from Surat, and cotton from Coimbatore then yarn is sent for the dying using chemical fast colours which involve dissolving the colours in hot water. The yarn is then washed very well in easy water to dispose of extra dye and dried out. The styles for borders and motifs are set on the dobby loom and the weaver gets down to weaving.

Maheshwari fabric is renowned for its weaving process which goes through silk cotton & wool. It is one of the lightest fabric along with the rich glossy finish. Finest weaving can be easily seen in the aforesaid fabric. This lightweight fabric is among the top choices for a specific category. Maheshwari sarees are distinguished by their vibrant colours, unusual combinations and distinctive designs that include stripes, checks and geometric borders.

Variations - Baingani Chandrakala, Chandratara, Beli and Parbi. While the Chandrakala and Baingani Chandrakala are plain sarees while Chandratara, Beli and Parbi are characterised by
stripes or checks.
Effect of power loom - A saree made upon traditional handloom is apt enough to give that fascinating wow in a handmade fabric of 9 yards. As of now when power-loom came into the picture, handloom is suffering very badly and hence the heritage in itself is striving for recognition and value which can balance the efforts of weavers to finish one single Saree. Nowadays a large number of sellers are dealing with sarees produced on a power loom at a lower price under the tag of maheshwarisaree . And because of that people are often getting misguided and losing their belief towards originality.
